EMF-shielded bedrooms, Ethernet-only Wi-Fi, reverse osmosis water, biohacked beds, air purifiers—there’s an endless list of gadgets and modalities for one’s home. As someone who has slowly acquired these gadgets over the years, my bedroom has become my favorite place for upgrades.
The most expensive item in my bedroom is, of course, our bed. I’ve always heard how toxic mattresses are, especially cheap ones…
Laden with VOCs (volatile organic compounds), flame retardants, polyurethane, and phthalates, traditional mattresses are straight-up death traps.
Anyone who cares about health realizes these toxins are no bueno (to say the least).
We spend most of our lives sleeping on our beds, yet most mattresses off-gas more toxins than nearly anywhere else in our homes.
The most precious asset we have is our time—and a function of our time is our health. How you get to use your time is really based on how well you feel.
Trust me, as someone who has almost died from health complications, I can assure you: health is wealth.
So what better item to invest in than a mattress? That’s why we decided to get an Essentia mattress.
Why is Essentia unique?
The manufacturing process for these beds is amazing. Unlike most bed manufacturers, they’re made right here in North America (Canada and the U.S.) with only organic materials.
They’re the pioneers of organic latex foam and have been producing these bad boys since the early 2000s.
Take a look at this process and tell me if you’ve ever seen anything like it!
Whenever someone asks us about our bed, I sum it up by saying, “You know how maple trees can be ‘milked’ for syrup? Well, Essentia pretty much does that, but with a rubber tree—then bakes the rubber milk into a bed.”
In all seriousness, these beds are badass. I’ve always loved a memory foam feel, but memory foam, as I’ve learned, is pretty much poisonous.
The bed doesn’t get hot like a memory foam bed would, despite having that similar texture. Comfort wise, I would describe it as firm but soft. It’s supportive, yet not hard, but not so soft you melt into it.
Truly, I don’t think you can find a bed with such a unique feel. You can’t understand the feel until you lay on one.
It did take us a little while to get used to, and even break in, but after several months I can’t imagine sleeping without it. It’s a fundamentally different feel—it’s not a spring bed, and it’s not a memory foam bed. It really just is its own thing.
The pillows are also fantastic. I was having severe, raging headaches with my old pillows every single stinkin day. Then I switched to their Harvest pillow and have since broken that doom loop.
The harvest pillow takes their foam and shred it into small pieces, while stuffing it into a GOTS organic cotton casing.
It’s like sleeping on the bed, but in pillow form. It actually supports my neck enough so I don’t strain from the gap between my head and neck.
Price
Price-wise, the Essentia might take a little while to save up for. They usually run big sale, up to 25% off, while including free pillows or sheets with the purchase of a bed.
Despite having a 25% sale, our bed cost us 5K! Yeah, I know, it was a lot. But think about it: you spend 30–40% (or whatever) of your life sleeping on a bed.
If you have the bed for 10–20 years (as a matter of fact, they have a 20-year warranty for their beds), that’s a pretty small investment to make, annualized over those years. Nonetheless, it’s still a huge investment and something that most just can’t afford.
Hopefully, as true competitors come onto the market and the technology gets better, these prices come down over the years.
